The Ozone Awards
im a little late on this one. This year’s Ozone Awards, held this weekend in Houston, Tex., were rife with controversy, from the obligatory scuffles to unexpected winners.
The show, held each year to congratulate Southern rap artists, experienced its first bit of trouble before the house lights went down when Houston rapper Trae allegedly sucker-punched fellow H-Town star Mike Jones. Jones, to his credit, went on stage later in bandages to present an award.
Many in attendance expected the late Chad “Pimp C” Butler to win a posthumous Tastemaker award, however the award was given to T-Pain. Pimp C did receive recognition at the show in the form of a tribute featuring former partner Bun B., OutKast’s Big Boi, Scarface and Too Short, among others.
Nashville rapper All Star won the Patiently Waiting award in the Tennessee category. The award is given to unsigned rappers on the rise.
Other winners of note:
Best Rap Artist:
Lil Wayne
Best R&B Artist:
Chris Brown
Best Rap Group:
UGK
Breakthrough Artist:
Shawty Lo
The ceremony will be aired on MTVJams and BET at a later date
