The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act has been signed into law and will allow the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute Civil Rights-era crimes.
The bill is named after Emmett Till, a black teenager who was mutilated and murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman in Mississippi in 1955. The case remains unsolved and his death helped propel the modern Civil Rights Movement.
The unprecedented bill authorizes the attorney general to spend $10 million annually over 10 years to investigate and prosecute cold cases from the Civil Rights-era.
