Obama Nominates the First Latina Supreme Court Judge

President Obama on Tuesday nominated federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Another child of the Bronx could be destined to make history. With that comes another opportunity for the national media to look at the Bronx in the same old way, as a place of merely two parts: the South Bronx and Yankee Stadium. Federal appeals court Judge Sonia Sotomayor, from the Bronxdale Houses, is on President Obama’s short list of nominees to replace Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court.

Much is being made of her roots, her Horatio Alger tale from a kid of the projects to possibly the highest court in the land. It’s great whenever the Bronx gets national attention as a breeding ground for the best and the brightest in this nation.

But as Sotomayor is profiled in publications and on television, how come they can’t get her neighborhood right? She was raised “in the shadow of Yankee Stadium,” a reporter told Chris Matthews on his NBC show. She grew up “within walking distance of Yankee Stadium,” said the Los Angeles Times. She was raised “near the old Yankee Stadium,” said The Washington Post (maybe not realizing the new one is across the street). She grew up “just a few blocks from Yankee Stadium,” said the South Chicagoan blog.

Maybe it adds more drama than to say she grew up hard by the Bruckner Expressway, along Rosedale Ave., in a complex of seven-story buildings with plots of grass in the southeast Bronx. After all, to say she grew up near the Stadium – in the west Bronx – conjures images of the Bronx burning down. But the reality is, even if either of the old or new stadiums that straddle 161st St. were as tall as the Empire State Building, Sotomayor could not have dwelled in their shadows. She probably played in the shade of the trees in Sound View Park. Within walking distance? “I wouldn’t walk to Yankee Stadium from here,” said William Hernandez, lifelong borough resident, who was working in the Bronxdale Houses the other day, as he has for 15 years. “That’s a 20- to 25-minute car ride on the expressway,” he said.

The Yankee Stadium angle may have begun in 1997, when Sotomayor was appointed to the Court of Appeals and an article said she lived about three miles from the Stadium, or when she wrote a decision in 1995 that ended the baseball strike, and there was much mention of her growing up in the Bronx.

“Welcome to Bronxdale, A Class of Excellence,” reads a sign at the project. The Bronxdale Houses were built in 1952, the largest of six housing developments in the area. The projects that went up back then were for working people raising families. They were pleasant places where everyone knew each other. They didn’t have the connotation they gained in the 1980s, when they were overrun with crime and drugs, and some city developments were under the control of dealers.

Review of "Girlfriend Expirience"

Entertainment Weekly gives it an A:

Shot during the early days of the economic crisis, The Girlfriend Experience is a mysterious and arresting look at how the culture of money turns love and desire into something you want to control. The escort, Chelsea, is played by Sasha Grey, a real-life adult-video star who is not so much a natural actress as a natural-born placid, affectless Barbie doll (imagine Eliot Spitzer consort
Ashley Dupré with a touch of Demi Moore).

The Boston Globe is also positive:

The dark joke of “The Girlfriend Experience” is that to be alive in early-21st-century America is to be a hustler, and to be a hustler is to be both maxed out and hooked on the dream. Not exactly a new idea (nor does it pretend to be), but the shoe fits. Chelsea’s customers are upscale professional men – slick Euro financiers, neurotic screenwriters, everyone but Eliot Spitzer – and they talk to her of job pressures and economic woes. Whatever this movie is, it’s not a turn-on; the sex, when we see it, feels perfunctory, as if these men don’t want to admit they’re actually paying for therapy.

New York is two ways about it, recognizing its merits but ultimately distracted by its failings:

It’s a desperate limbo—everyone is selling, few are buying. But most of the dialogue is listless, and no matter how much Soderbergh snips and stitches, the movie is a corpse with twitching limbs. It’s rare to watch actors who appear to be improvising (badly) and yet manage so often to step on one another’s lines. The suspense is minuscule: Will Chelsea find love with a client she barely knows or be dashed against the rocks? (Three guesses.)

And finally, another ambivalent, two-star review in Orlando Weekly:

“With her flat affect, lack of culture and utter refusal to engage, Chelsea couldn’t even dazzle the likes of Forrest F*cking Gump.” It’s a damaging review for Chelsea, but the problem is that it’s true about Grey herself, even more so than Chelsea. Grey is less convincing as her character than most porn stars are at faking orgasm.

Obama Names African American as Head of NASA

President Barack Obama on Saturday named former shuttle commander Charles Bolden to lead NASA at a critical time for the space agency. The White House has ordered a complete outside review of NASA’s manned space program, including plans to return astronauts to the moon. Bolden flew in space four times _ twice as shuttle commander _ and once was assistant deputy administrator at NASA headquarters in Washington. The 62-year-old Bolden left NASA in 1994.

Hajime Sorayama x KAWS

Here’s a preview of an upcoming collaboration between KAWS and Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama. According to the arts collector,
We just caught wind of this upcoming figure collaboration between KAWS and Hajimie Sorayama. Based off the signature on the sketch, its clear this conceptual design was illustrated by Sorayama, however KAWS hinted to the project on his Dec. 2 blog post, noting the two had started working on the project a few years ago. The sculpture will be cast in metal and is a hybrid of the KAWS Companion with Sorayama’s Future Mickey Mouse (pictured below), which was also released by Medicom Toys. We can only guess this guy will be called Future Companion, continuing the ongoing progression of the character that KAWS has already developed, from the Original, through the Five Year Later versions. No news yet on a release date, but price is rumored to be around $1,100.
This is a project we definitely look towards. Stay tuned for more info!
